Load adjustment of air separation equipment refers to the process of dynamically adjusting equipment operating parameters and process flows according to production needs, in order to change the output or purity of products such as oxygen and nitrogen, while ensuring the safe, stable, and efficient operation of the equipment. Its core lies in maintaining optimal operating conditions for the equipment during load fluctuations through precise control of key parameters.
The core objective of load regulation is to adapt to production fluctuations and meet the dynamic demand for gas production in industries such as chemical and metallurgical. It aims to optimize operational efficiency, avoid long-term inefficient operation of equipment (such as no-load or overload), and reduce energy consumption per unit of product. Additionally, it ensures system safety, preventing potential safety hazards such as flooding in distillation columns, fluctuations in main condenser liquid levels, and equipment overpressure caused by sudden load changes.
Key parameters and objects of load adjustment: Feed air volume, by adjusting the inlet guide vane or speed of the air compressor, to control the air flow entering the system. Operating conditions of the distillation tower, by adjusting the pressure, temperature, reflux ratio, etc. of the upper and lower towers to maintain gas-liquid equilibrium within the distillation tower. Expansion mechanism cooling capacity, by changing the nozzle opening or speed of the expander, to adjust the cooling capacity to match load changes. Product output, by adjusting the compression and delivery volume of products such as oxygen, nitrogen, and argon according to demand.

If the temperature after the expander of the air separation unit is too low, it should find out the cause of the low temperature and take measures to increase the temperature after the expander. If the low temperature of expander is caused by liquid air in front of expander, appropriate measures should be taken to reduce the liquid air level of lower column. If it is caused by other reasons, the more effective method is generally throttling in front of the expander. Throttling will not increase the temperature in front of the expander, but throttling will reduce the pressure in front of the expander, so the pressure difference between the front and the back of the expander will be reduced, the expander will do less work and the temperature will be reduced, so the temperature at the after of the expander can be increased.
