Changes in entropy and enthalpy after throttling and expansion

Throttling and expansion are two commonly used methods for generating cooling capacity. The throttling process generally involves a sudden decrease in the flow area of gas through the throttle valve, causing a pressure drop due to gas disturbance. Due to the short time, there is no heat exchange with the outside world, and the enthalpy value of the gas remains unchanged. The throttling process is irreversible, resulting in an increase in entropy. Expansion is the work done by the gas, and the enthalpy of the gas decreases. Ideally, this is a reversible process, so the entropy value of the expansion process remains unchanged.

Traditional LNG receiving stations use seawater open-frame vaporisers or submerged combustion vaporisers to vaporise LNG, which not only wastes valuable cold energy but also produces localised low temperature pollution of the nearby sea. The air separation temperature range is between -190C - 150C and the LNG vaporisation temperature is -162C, which matches the liquid air separation plant temperature range. The use of LNG's high quality low temperature cold energy for liquid air separation plant...

The load regulation range of low pressure air separation unit is related to the regulating performance of feed air compressor, the regulating performance of expander and the structural characteristics of distillation column. At present, the flow regulation range of turbine air compressor with inlet guide vane is 75% to 100%, and that of turbocharged expander with adjustable nozzle is 65% to 100%. Next, the most important thing is to adjust the residual of the distillation column. At present, the load regulation range of distillation column with structured packing can reach 50% - 100%, while that of traditional sieve tray column is 70% - 100%. If the load is too low, it will cause liquid leakage because the speed of steam passing through the sieve is too slow. When oxygen is sufficient and the oxygen output needs to be reduced, first reduce the output of oxygen products, then reduce the air flow accordingly, and adjust the expansion air volume according to the main cooling level.
