As far as the liquid holding capacity is concerned, it is easier to establish a distillation condition in a packed column. This is because a packed tower only needs to wet the surface of the dressing and the liquid film can be built up, whereas a sieve plate tower requires the liquid layer to reach a certain height. The main factors affecting the amount of liquid held in the packed tower include: the shape, size, surface characteristics and filling characteristics of the packing; gas-liquid two-phase flow of the physical characteristics; the structure of the tower components and installation characteristics; the operating conditions of the tower.
