When using sieve plate towers for distillation, the liquid must be covered with a certain height of liquid layer in order to exchange heat and mass with the rising gas. In contrast, a packed tower only needs to wet the packing surface to form a liquid film for heat and mass exchange. Therefore, the liquid holding capacity of a packed tower is much smaller than that of a sieve plate tower, and the packed tower can also establish distillation conditions more quickly.
