The development of precooling system of air separation unit has three stages:

1. Spray type: there are several spray heads in the tower, and the water is atomized when it comes out of the spray head by pressure, so as to increase the contact area between air and water and achieve the heat exchange effect. Disadvantages: the high resistance of the nozzle leads to high energy consumption and unstable atomization effect; In order to achieve better atomization effect, only the diameter of the nozzle hole can be reduced, which is easy to block; Large water consumption and low heat transfer efficiency.

2. Sieve plate type: there are dozens of large aperture sieve plates in the tower. The sieve plate plays the role of increasing the contact area of air and water and strengthening the heat exchange. Disadvantages: there are many parts in the tower, the structure is complex, and the manufacturing is difficult; It is easy to scale in the high-temperature section, resulting in the decrease of heat exchange effect.

3. Packed tower: the tower is equipped with bulk packing. Air and water contact on the packing surface with complex surface shape, which has a larger heat transfer area and better heat exchange effect. Advantages: the gas water contact is changed from step-by-step contact to continuous contact, and the heat exchange effect is better when the temperature gradient is continuously changed; The appearance of various efficient packings and distributors further increases the heat transfer efficiency of the packed tower.
