PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) and cryogenic air separation are mainstream technologies for industrial gas production, with core differences lying in scale, purity, continuity, and cost, and clear differentiation in suitable operating conditions.
Cryogenic air separation relies on low-temperature distillation, suitable for large-scale, high-purity, continuous and stable operations. A single unit can achieve a production capacity of tens of thousands of Nm³/h, with oxygen purity of ≥99.5%. It can co-produce high-purity nitrogen, argon, and liquid products. It is suitable for oxygen enrichment in steel metallurgy blast furnaces, centralized gas supply in large chemical parks, ultra-high purity gas demand in electronic semiconductors, and the production of industrial gas liquid products. Its slow start-up (requiring several hours) and high investment are offset by low energy consumption for large-scale operations, making it suitable for long-term continuous production.
PSA is based on ambient temperature adsorption separation, suitable for small and medium-sized operations, moderate purity requirements, and flexible intermittent conditions. Its production capacity is mostly within a few hundred Nm³/h, with oxygen purity ranging from 90% to 95%, and it only produces a single gas. It is applicable to scenarios such as medical oxygen supply, nitrogen filling for food preservation, small and medium-sized laser cutting, and wastewater treatment. The equipment is modular, starts quickly (within a few minutes), requires low investment, and is simple to operate and maintain. It can be started and stopped immediately, offering better energy efficiency for small and medium-sized operations.
In summary, for large-scale continuous use of high-purity gas, cryogenic separation is preferred; for small and medium-scale flexible gas use, PSA is the choice. The economic threshold is set at a production capacity of 1000-2000 Nm³/h, and the selection should be made based on a comprehensive consideration of purity, continuity, and investment.

In the condensation evaporator the liquid oxygen is heated to evaporate and the gas nitrogen is cooled and condensed. Both the liquid oxygen and the gas nitrogen are in a saturated state. If the saturation temperature of nitrogen is lower than the saturation temperature of oxygen at the same pressure, the purpose of condensing gas and nitrogen with liquid oxygen cannot be achieved. For this reason the heat transfer temperature difference in the condensing evaporator must be established by the pr...
