At present, most of the cold insulation materials filled in the cold insulation box of the air separation equipment are pearlescent sand.

Pearlescent sand is a particle with small apparent density, which is easy to fly. It will invade the five senses, irritate the throat and eyes, and even inhale into the lungs through the respiratory tract. Therefore, wear protective mask during operation.

Pearlescent sand has good fluidity, and its density is smaller than water. People falling into the pearlescent sand layer will be submerged and suffocated. Therefore, the manhole at the top of the cold box and the loading position should be equipped with a square safety iron grid welded with 8~10mm steel bars to prevent accidents.

When it is necessary to remove pearlite, it is found that there is leakage in the cold box. If it is an oxygen leak, the oxygen concentration in the cold box will increase. If the hot work is carried out, the explosion accident may occur; If the leakage is nitrogen, the nitrogen concentration in the cold box is very high, which may cause suffocation accident. Therefore, before entering the cold box for operation, it is necessary to analyze whether the oxygen concentration in the cold box is within the normal range (19%~21%) in advance.

In addition, the pearlescent sand in the cold insulation box is in a low temperature state (- 50~- 80 ℃), and antifreezing measures should be taken when removing the pearlescent sand. At the same time, pay attention to the fact that low-temperature pearlite sand will condense and become damp in the air, which will affect the cold insulation performance of the next filling.

The non-power consuming option for liquid air separation plants can be used for full liquid air separation plants, where the produced liquid is sold off. This approach is currently available for most LNG receiving stations. For air separation units with a large cold capacity, the liquid air can be pressurised to 6baA in a vacuum storage tank, and then heat exchanged through a heat exchanger, instead of the air compressor, directly into the cold box for distillation. At the same time in the cold b...
